Testing with gnome-terminal yields the same behavior as xterm, so it seems like something is wrong with urxvt, but I was not able to reproduce such differences in behavior with anything other than mutt. It’s the default terminal emulation application for Linux. I'm not trying to fix the tmux thing specifically - that's not why I'm here. PuTTY is a client program for the SSH, Telnet and Rlogin.
